The Riad

Fountain riad in Meknes

A riad is a large dar (traditional Moroccan home) or composed of several small dars. It usually boasts an indoor garden and a fountain.

Riads can be found in the historical part (medina) of most large Moroccan cities. They are buildings that offer an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity. A riad normally counts with two floors though there are some with only one. The common areas are generally situated on the ground floor.

A riad is a perfect example of Moroccan architecture.
